Carbohydrates are friends..really

i did mention that i try not to eat too much carbs, i was talking about bad carbs..... veggies and fruits are carbs too but they are not the bad kind..... and i eat them a lot....

i used to be very confused about simple and complex carbs and i thought i should put my notes here so i would remember it..

first, let's do definition of terms....

glucose:

  • simple sugar molecules
  • source of energy
  • brain's source of energy
  • what the intestine can absorb

insulin
  • a very potent fat storage hormone
  • produced by pancreas
  • allows transport of glucose into cells that require energy
  • when insulin levels are high, it is impossible to burn fat
  • also means, instead, every little bit of food you eat ends up getting stored as fat
  • eating lots of simple sugar causes insulin level to remain elevated
  • takes care of keeping blood sugar w/in a very tight range

type 1 diabetis = low insulin = glucose cannot be absorbed into cells and the level of blood sugar would increase
type 2 diabetis = high insulin puts such a strain on the pancreas that it is not able to cope with the insulin demands

Complex Carbs vs Simple Carbs

before we do the comparison we need to know that the intestine can only digest simple sugars such as glucose......

complex

  • longer sugar chains (3 sugar molecules),
  • takes longer to break down as glucose,
  • digestive enzymes have to work harder & needs energy to break chain,
  • food in its natural form (fruit, nuts, whole grain, veggies),
  • unprocessed or whole grain,
  • if grain can be sprouted its its complex carb,
  • more filling,
  • slow and steady digestion process provides steady supply of energy,

The slow and steady digestion process of a complex carbohydrate ensures that there is a steady supply of energy to meet your needs.

refined/simple

  • broken down very easily and are rapidly absorbed through the intestine,
  • need very little digestion effort, broken down easily and absorbed easily by intestine,
  • usually in powder and white (rice, flour),
  • cant be sprouted it's refined,

The sudden influx of sugar molecules into the blood stream requires that your body over-release insulin into the blood stream to control the blood sugar levels.

fast digestion = glucose rush...glucose rush = over-release of insulin...glucose rush = excess available energy... excess glucose = fat

Carbohydrates are an important source of energy while protein is a very important building block.

The body’s preferred fuel choice is glucose which is a very simple sugar molecule derived from carbohydrates. Glucose is the brain’s preferred fuel. Your brain cannot burn fat for fuel.

Carbohydrates are made from simple sugar molecules such as glucose or fructose (fruit sugar). These simple sugar molecules are bonded together to form longer chains of sugar in a carbohydrate.

Digestion of carbohydrates require the breakdown of the longer chains into simple sugar molecules such as glucose and fructose. The body can only utilize carbohydrates for energy when the longer chains are broken down to glucose molecules. Only simple sugars such as glucose can be absorbed through the intestine.

Excess Calories from Digestion of Refined Carbohydrates are Stored as Fat

Refined or simple carbohydrates need very little digestion effort. Refined carbohydrates are broken down very easily and are rapidly absorbed through the intestine. The in rush of glucose into the blood stream is rapid and usually results in excess available energy. The body stores the excess glucose as fat. Once all the excess glucose is used up by being stored as fat and used to meet the immediate energy needs, you will become hungry again. Eating refined carbohydrates will result in very rapid weight gain.

The sudden influx of sugar molecules into the blood stream requires that your body over-release insulin into the blood stream to control the blood sugar levels. The body tries very hard to keep blood sugar within a very tight range and it achieves this via the insulin hormone.

Why not to eat at night
Your insulin levels are very sensitive at night and it will be much easier to store extra fat if you consume sugars later in the day.

nutrisystem kaput

i mentioned about nutrisystem....i did try it for almost 2 months...it worked for a while and what i did was i followed their food diary which is adding protein, dairy, fruits & veggies with my  nutrisystem meals....and because i eat every 2-3 hours i didnt have too much craving because i'm always full....i lost about 3lbs in a week but got bored with the food and didnt do the in between meals anymore...

and then one day i decided i dont like their meals because its mostly carbs (pasta, chocolate bars to name a few) plus i realized i can find the same boxes of ready-to-eat meals on grocery stores so i decided i'll stop my order and buy similar items at the grocery store instead...

yeah, yeah, they're "clinically" prepared and each food has the right amount of nutrient combination but being the stingy person that i am i decided i dont want to spend 297 every month anymore....

their food is good, btw....their desserts and snacks are good too...but like i said i dont like the candy bars as lunch and their food is mostly pasta and other carbs and i try to stay away from carbs...

so there...that's my semi-review for my nutrisystem, lol..

running for the wedding...

i started running again... i try to atleast run 3 miles every other day (or 4.8 km)....i'm aware that i dont lose too much weight when i run but i like the feeling i get after running.... i think i know why some people get addicted to running...

wait..

i take that back, i do lose some weight...but very minimal compared to my scarsdale diet that i usually lose 3lbs/week... i do lose weight when running but very minimal....

according to my nike plus i lose 300 cal when i ran for 3miles...which means 900 cal for a week if i run 3x/week or 3,600 cal for the whole month if i run 3x/week for a month ...which also mean a sure weight loss of 1lb every month....

3,600 = 1lb

and if i behaved and i have my discipline in place i would be able to go back to my target weight on my wedding....ahhh! that's a nice thought...

oh! oh! plus running speeds up your metabolism and that's good too.....that means i can eat more desserts and burn it fast, lol

anyway, now, my problem is how do i motivate myself to continuously do this? i'm ningas kugon most of the time.... but so far here's what works for me:

1. my playlist...i like music, a lot.... and i look forward to running so i could hear my recent mp3 downloads on my ipod shuffle....

2. i like the feeling of being all sweaty and hingaly (hehe, i was being cute, i know it doesnt work, lol, anyway, what i really meant is "out of breath") after my run.... makes me feel like i lost 10lbs already.....

3. i like that part when im about to sync my nikeplus to my nikeplus account online and having my run posted automatically on my twitter account and facebook (although it doesnt post on my twitter anymore and the facebook post is kinda flaky)

4. i like the trail i'm running on....i love the trees and watching people play baseball.....

reasons why i get so lazy:

1. i hate changing..i wish i can run with what im already wearing at work but ofcourse i cant....

2. the first few miles are the hardest because my knee and legs feels like they want to give up right away.... (i usually just ignore this so i could continue)

3. when it's too hot out

4. when it's too cold out

(i should have a solution for #3 and #4 and that's to do treadmill instead...problem is treadmill bores me)

i guess that's it.....if i'll be able to address the stuff that makes me lazy maybe i'll be able to continue this for the next 6 months, atleast...
